Individual Baked Oatmeal

While scouring Pinterest, I found this recipe for Individual Baked Oatmeal.

What made me make it, is that people were comparing it to granola bars.

So I got to work!

And I was excited to use the blueberries that we picked the night before!

Once they were baked I packed them up and stored in an airtight container.

I made mini for my mini men, and full size for me and the hubs.

Now, the flavor is great! You can't taste half the ingredients ( banana and honey) that I expected you to taste.  But I was a little bummed about the texture. It was mushy, I expected more like granola bars (per comments on recipe). So next time, I think I may leave some if not all the milk out and see what happens!

Other than the texture they are perfect for grabbing and going, especially if you make them in muffin cups!

Clean an Upholstered Couch ( Non Microfiber)

We purchased our couch literally the day we came home from the hospital when we had Carter. I had an unexpected csection and was on orders to not go up and down the stairs more than necesarry. So my  husband and I decided it was time to upgrade if I was to be sleeping on it.

Well now, 3 1/2 years later it was a mess. Stained on all the cushions. And looked terrible.
I had spot cleaned when there was a spill but never really got them out.

So, I tried searching online how to clean it, and came up with nothing. Nada. Zilch.
Everything I found was for microfiber fabric and are was nothing like microfiber, so I couldn't use that advice. So I just went ahead and did what I thought would work. And it did! Not a single stain is left!
I was so excited that it's all I could talk about for days!

Here's what I did to make this:

Look like this:

Big difference, hey?

Sorry, I don't have pictures. I had my doubts that this wasn't going to work!

First I took all my covers off the cushions. I know, everything I read said not to.
But spot cleaning hadn't worked in the past and I was desperate.

Next I took dish soap. Yes regular "handwash your dishes" soap, and a scrub brush and got to work.
I scrubbed each stain until it was soapy.

Once I scrubbed all the stains with soap, I filled up my washer and put all my cushions in. I left the top open so it would fill and let them soak.
Did you know soaking for 1 hour is just as good as soaking for 8 hours?
Me neither, I learned it while researching before I started to do this!

After an hour or so, I spun out all the water. I didn't run my washer normally, just got all the dirty water  out and refilled the washer with fresh water. I did this until my water was clear after the hour, it took maybe 4-5 times but it was well worth it.

At this point, I went ahead pulled the covers out and took a look.  They were getting better, so I took a Shout stick ( with rubber tip thing) and scrubbed the stains again, added my regular laundry detergent and ran the washer as normal.

And then I ran it one more time without soap ( to make sure all the soap was out, I didn't want the cushions to be grimy with leftover soap, like it did when I would spot clean sometimes)

Now onto drying, since my washer spun them out pretty well I just set them on top of the washer to air dry maybe ten minutes or so.  Then I put them on my cushions. I did this because I didn't want to chance them shrinking in the wash, and I wanted them to conform to the cushion. It took a while to get the cushions back in, so be patient if your doing this! I made sure to line my piping up with the edges to ensure they didn't get mis-shapen.

And that's it! It took all day but was so worth it!
Now my couch looks like new, and I don't have to convince my husband to get me a new one!

Have you ever cleaned your cushions of your couch?
I've heard and seen horror stories, which is why i was nervous! But I'm so glad I made the leap and did it!

Broccoli Salad

You know it's summer when your making either a potato, macaroni or pasta salad once a week!
Well, to change it up I found this recipe a couple years ago and it's definitely been in rotation ever since!

The best part? No cooking! It's a chop, mix and eat salad!

To make you need:
Broccoli
Red Onion
Tomatoes
Celery
Mayonaise
Splash of Vinegar
Salt, Pepper and Sugar

Some other variations/addition I have tried:
Sunflower Seeds
Bacon (Yum! But makes you have to cook something)
Raisins

All you have to do is chop everything up into bite size pieces. Toss in mayo (similar to how much you add for pasta or potato salad) and  a small splash of vinegar.  Then salt and pepper to taste. And if you want it to be a sweeter salad add a tiny pinch of sugar.
If you need measurements here's a similar salad recipe.

Also, you could also probably lighten it up by using greek yogurt or sour cream instead of mayo!

Do you have any salad recipes you would like to share?
I love adding new recipes to our rotation so nothing gets boring!

Lifessaver Series: Pan Scrub

Just another tip to save you some time, money and frustration!

Today I am sharing a tip that somewhat worked for me, found here. Normally if a tip doesn't work for me I don't share, but this one worked to an extent. And I think if I used it before pan got this bad, and I continue to work at it. It will work.

To scrub your pans make a paste out of:
Peroxide
Baking Soda

(I poured my baking soda over my pan, and then dripped the peroxide on top.  Adding more of each if needed)

Here's my pan before. This pan is used for french fries, chicken wings you name it.
Normally with a piece of foil, that cleans up most of the grease.  But not all, obviously.

Here it is with scrubbing three times.  A little progress. But very slow.

So my thought is the next time I use this pan I'm going to try using the baking soda, peroxide "paste" when the pan is still warm. And each time I use it the paste hopefully it will get better?

Have you tried to clean your pans with peroxide and baking soda?

I've seen all over that it works for a bunch of things but I'm not 100% sold yet..

Craft Fails...

Wow, this week has been full of craft fails. So many that I'm not even sharing!
If your a friend on Facebook, you may have saw that I was sewing away.
Yea, well. That didn't work out.

So yesterday I picked  up my tried and true knit pattern and needles and started this.

The trusty Dishcloth Blanket Pattern.

CO 4.
K 2, YO K to end
(Repeat until the blanket is as big as you want, or 145 stitches depending on your yarn and needle)
K1, K2tog,YO, K2tog, K to end.
Repeat until 4 stitches remain.
BO.

So simple and one of my favorite patterns!

Lifesavers: "Tailor" Your Jeans!

Just another tip to save you some time, money and frustration.

Now, I do not consider myself very fashionable.

But every now and then I will watch a tv show or see some tricks in a magazine and more times than not they all come back to the right fit.

Well, after having two babies I feel like I need frankenstein pants.
One size for my waist.
One size for my thighs
AND
One size for my height!
(which if you ask my husband he would chime in my height was a preexisiting condition!)

So,  I finally sucked it up and tried to do something about it!

The first pair fit in the waist, and weren't to bad in the height department so I just wanted them taken in a little. This was super simple. I just found the seam that didn't have that distinguised jean looking seam and flipped them inside out, and put my sewing foot on the existing seam. It's amazing at what a difference a 1/4" seam on each leg made!

Perfect fit!

That's all it took to get my confidence up to mess around with the next pair.

These jeans were my favorite, just because of the texture and feel of them. They were so soft from the day I bought them, on clearance for like $2. So I felt like if I ruined them, it wasn't a financial loss just an emotional one, again so soft!

So the problem with this pair was that the fit was all wrong. For some reason or another, when the waist was where it should be, the crotch was between my knees. The legs were supposed to be straight leg and were not terrible, but the big crotch made them very baggy throughout.

So, I tried to just take them in like I did for the first pair, finding the non jean looking seam and just going in. It started to work but was still off. So I decided to use a pair of jeans with a good fit as my guide. I ended up cutting about 4 inches out of the crotch area! I know. Strange.  Then I tapered back to the original hem ( because it wasn't too big to  begin with)

But now my favorite feeling jeans, are now really my favorite fitting jeans!  Yay!

Have you done any repurposing lately? Or tailoring?

What's Growing Around Here!

Today I'm sharing what I am growing with you.
Here's what we grew last year!

This year I started almost everything from seed, normally I start with plants.
I feel like my garden is behind because I planted the seeds straight into the ground.

This year we will be eating fresh:

Chives

lettuce, kale, spinach
beets, carrots radishes
(I'm thinking these need to be in a container next year, for less weeding!)

Tomatoes

Watermelon

Parsley, Dill, Basil, Cilantro and Oregano
(not pictured, they're still pretty small!)

Zucchini, Squash and Acorn Squash

Peas, Bean Cucumbers

Sweet Bell Peppers, and Hot Peppers

Rhubarb

Garlic

Celery
(Not pictured)
(did you know you can stick your store bought celery ends into the ground and they regrow?)

Strawberries

Raspberries

Blueberries

and the latest addition... Peach Trees!
(only one is shown)

DIY Garden Supports

Remember my list?

Well, it's almost all crossed off!

I wanted to make some new supports for my plants to grow up, but didn't want to run out and buy some. So I thought about it and came up with these.

Not bad for free!

(What's funny is that I cleaned up the garden, AFTER I took these. Oops!)

We had bought this kiddie pool/tent combo that was so hard to drain that we stopped using it as a pool. But after a year of using the tent the tent ripped. So out with the tent but I saved the poles.

Using the poles and connectors I whipped the frame up in no time.
Next I used some cotton yarn and got to work.

Even though my inspiration is cute, I was concerned about using spray paint on something my food was going to grow on. Maybe I don't have to worry but I was a little nervous. I'm thinking colored duct tape though... Go figure.

What kind of garden supports do you use? Do you cage your tomatoes? Or just tie them to poles?
This year I'm on the fence whether or not I will cage them...
