What's a pirate, without a Parrot?

Once I decided Carter would be a pirate, I decided Wyatt was the perfect size to be his Parrot.

Again this was a super simple, and fast costume!

After I dyed my onesie red ( couldn't find one for the life of me) I got to work. First I started with the wings. And I have a confession to make. I love fleece for Halloween costumes. I used brown for Carter's monkey last year and its great, you don't have to hem and they are nice and warm for a NY Halloween!

To start, I used a sheet of paper to make my wing pattern. I measured the underside of the onesie arm and determined a sheet of paper (8" x 11") would be perfect! I drew out my largest layer of red first.

Then I decided I wanted a second red layer, so I added that.

Once I had them laid out I added the yellow and blue ( I just cut them freely).

To attach them, I attached each wing to the shoulder and the wrist leaving the rest free. This helped get him in and out of the carseat!

I could have stopped here, but it seemed that after the first stop I needed to alter his costume a bit.

I noticed that he spit up and the onesie looked awful and we had a ton of stops left, so I ran home and made him a two sided bib. Essentially a large oval with a head whole cut out. I put it over his head and then carefully hot glued the edges together ( You could sew these, I just didn't have time to lug my machine out)

Finally, my favorite part! The leggings! I originally bought a pair of orange pants but then decided it was going to be too cold to worry about socks falling off, so I stopped by Made by Rae and printed out her legging pattern. I used fleece and no elastic waist and it worked like a charm. For everyday use? Probably not, I would have needed the elastic.

Happy Belated Halloween!

Arg! Carter's Pirate Costume!

While pregnant, I introduced Carter to Peter Pan.
Which led to Jake & The Neverland Pirates,
which led to Carter loving Pirates.

So I asked him, what he would want to be for Halloween, his first answer Pirate. Perfect.

This was a simple costume to make! All I had to make was his pants ( which I could have bought, but had enough fabric for) his vest, bandana, belt and eye patch (per his request)!

To make the vest I simply traced the outline of a shirt that fits him. Cut up the center and sewed the sides and shoulders. I added a patch on one side.

To make the pants I made them exactly the way I make pj pants for him. Full Tutorial here.

The bandana and belt are just ripped up strips of red ( that I dyed) fabric. I put a piece of elastic in his bandana back to help hold it on. The belt I just tied.

Eyepatch was an oval folded over the elastic and sewed down.

And tomorrow, I am sharing his brother Parrot, Wyatt.

Carter's Costume: Part 1

So, I made Carter's costume... And I made step by step instructions if you want to make one too, I just haven't had good enough weather to photograph him in it!  So.. hopefully today? Tommorow?  But here is part one.. What do you think he is?

Supplies:
Banana
White Felt and Yellow Fleece

Peel your banana.

Place your peels on paper.

Trace your peels

Number you peels, so you know which ones belong next to one another.

Sew your peels in order, Sew 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, and 4 to 1. But leave a gap so you can stuff.

I didn't care that my seam showed from the outside, because the yellow peel will hide it.

Repeat the process with the yellow. Only sewing up halfway.

Place banana in peel!  How cute?

What do you think he is?
