Halloween 2014

If you haven't noticed in years past, I've tried to keep the kids costumes within a theme. Well. This year I didn't! I wanted to, but decided it against it.

So without further ado, we have the Flash, Super Why, and Anna from Frozen!

I have to thank my sister, for the freezer paper stencils for all the kids shirts. (She has a Silhouette)

It made making their costumes that much easier!

For the Flash, I started with a red long sleeve shirt, red sweatpants and yellow and red felt.

First, I freezer paper stenciled his shirt. 

Using felt, I made him a mask, belt and boots. 

I love fleece and felt for costumes, no hemming required!

For Super Why, I started with the same thing, shirt and sweatpants, but in blue and Green fleece.

 I used a my creative license to change the shirt up a bit.

Super Why has a book, on his shirt. But my Wyatt is always pointing out W's so I did that instead.

Again, freezer paper stencil for the shirt. 

Fleece for his cape, mask and belt. 

Princess Anna was easier than I expected!

I bought a white turtleneck (wanted light blue but didn't find), black tshirt, blue fabric, and pink fleece.

Freezer paper stencil on a black shirt, over a white turtleneck to look like a shirt and vest.

Then I whipped up a blue skirt, just a rectangle with an elastic waist!

For her cape, I used fleece. I cut out a circle and slit it to create the front, neck hole.

Then using another layer of fleece, I just mimicked the larger piece!

 For the closure, it's just two hearts with tails sewn in felt!

I love making my kids "semi homemade" costumes! A couple store bought pieces(shirts, pants) with some extra love make perfect costumes. Plus my kids are already asking to wear again, so after I get all the melted chocolate out of their shirts, they can wear their costumes again!

Halloween is one of those things that I hate blogging about!

I love to make our costumes, but hate to share them ahead of time!

Anyways! Here's what I came up with this year...

Our Minion Family...

Using a basic hat pattern, I made each of my kids their own minion hat. 

Are you as hooked as we are to Despicable Me? 

Once finished with them, I made a little headband for me! 

Three pairs of overalls, yellow shirts, black gloves and we are all set!

I'll update once I get a picture of us all!

Bakes & Sweets: Spooky Skelton Candy

Ever make candy? It's super easy with Candy Melts!

Pick out your mold, melt, fill, chill, done!

So when I was working on my #spookyspaces for Halloween and Joann Fabric and Craft Store, I knew candy would be included!

When I went shopping at Joann's I made sure to check out their molds.

Seriously, there are so many awesome molds for candy, you can make it for any theme!

But sticking with spooky and Halloween, I picked up some skulls and skeleton fingers.

When I was making the skulls, I thought how could I make more without using more chocolate?

Fill them? And what better to fill skulls with... but brains?

So I started plopping cherries into the skulls, and the effect is perfect!

Look at those eyes! Love. 

The perfect amount of spooky for my little ones!

And how about the fingers? Looking good in that jar!

Now, I wont give these to any trick or treater, because they are not wrapped. 

But friends, family that I know... Absolutely!

Eek! Skeleton Portraits

I will be the first to confess, with three littles four and under.

Decorating this year was going to be put on the back burner.

Until I teamed up with Joann Fabric and Craft Stores

to create a #spookyspace!

Now, thanks to Joann Fabric and Craft Stores I am ready to answer the door for our trick or treaters!

To create my #spookyspace, I started with the wall. All year round it's bare! 

So I thought I better start there!

What better than to put on the wall than portraits? Even better, spooky portraits!

To make my Spooky, Skeleton Portraits of the kids, I started out by going to my local Joann store.

I picked up:

3 - Wood Plaques

Black & White Paint

Paint brushes

Ribbon

First things first, I needed a skeleton to work from. 

After a quick search I found this one. 

Instead of printing and messing with the size, I just traced it off my screen.

Using a piece of paper I decided that if I folded it in half the head would fit on my plaque.

Then I pulled up the image, and traced. Super simple!

Next, I traced my skeleton with a ball point pen and a little pressure on my plaque.

This gave an embossed effect, even after I painted my background the skeleton would be on there.

Next, Paint!

Starting with the background, then using a small brush to fill in my skeleton.

Personalize!

To make my portraits match my kids, I did two bow ties (boys) and one hair bow.

Glue them in place.

Hang!

To not have to put three holes in the wall, I decided to hang them together using a D ring.

I put the ribbon through the ring, then glued and sewed in place to ensure it didn't come crashing down!

To hand my portraits from the ribbon, I first put some glue on the ribbon, then because of the weight I screwed them to the ribbon too!

Kid Craft: Making Spooky Masks!

Have you ever picked up any of the masks in Joanns?

You know, the bare wood ones in the dollar bins?

I've picked up a few for the boys and I to color, and we are hooked!

We've painted them, colored them with crayons and colored pencils. 

And all look great!

Halloween Costumes of Years Past!

Can you believe it is the spookiest month of the year? Already?

Me neither!

Here are our past costumes! 

I'm looking for Carter's first Halloween Costume pictures( it was pre blogging days!)

He was an adorable elephant!

Next came the Monkey...

Then the Pirate

and the Parrot!

This year we had everyone on the same page for costumes until maybe two nights ago! 

So it is back to the drawing board I guess!

Not ONE, Not TWO...But THREE

This year we left it up to Carter what he wanted to be. 

And me being that crazy mommy wanted Wyatt to match in some way.

Well, when Carter narrowed it down to "Teleskins", I mean Skeleton. 

I decided that both boys could be Skeletons, 

and maybe if Mommy had the energy she would be one too (I'll let you know if that happens!)

Using this awesome, free template I made freezer paper stencils and went to work!

Instead of printing out the template on paper and transferring to freezer paper, I just traced it off my computer screen. Doing it this way, I was able to cut out my freezer paper to size (to make sure it fit on the shirt and pants), and then zoom in or out to make my bones fit the paper. Worked like a charm!

I'll update tomorrow with pictures of them in costume! 

Because I know my boys, will some how get them dirty just taking pictures! Ha!

Of Halloween's Past

Seeing as I have been slacking on the Halloween Decorating front, I thought I would share some things I have done in the past. Between baby #3 coming next month, getting ready for her arrival and construction happening, crafting unfortunately has been on a smaller scale than usual!

What's a pirate, without a Parrot?

Once I decided Carter would be a pirate, I decided Wyatt was the perfect size to be his Parrot.

Again this was a super simple, and fast costume!  

After I dyed my onesie red ( couldn't find one for the life of me) I got to work. First I started with the wings. And I have a confession to make. I love fleece for Halloween costumes. I used brown for Carter's monkey last year and its great, you don't have to hem and they are nice and warm for a NY Halloween!

To start, I used a sheet of paper to make my wing pattern. I measured the underside of the onesie arm and determined a sheet of paper (8" x 11") would be perfect! I drew out my largest layer of red first.

Then I decided I wanted a second red layer, so I added that.

Once I had them laid out I added the yellow and blue ( I just cut them freely).

To attach them, I attached each wing to the shoulder and the wrist leaving the rest free. This helped get him in and out of the carseat!  

I could have stopped here, but it seemed that after the first stop I needed to alter his costume a bit.

I noticed that he spit up and the onesie looked awful and we had a ton of stops left, so I ran home and made him a two sided bib. Essentially a large oval with a head whole cut out. I put it over his head and then carefully hot glued the edges together ( You could sew these, I just didn't have time to lug my machine out)

Finally, my favorite part! The leggings! I originally bought a pair of orange pants but then decided it was going to be too cold to worry about socks falling off, so I stopped by Made by Rae and printed out her legging pattern. I used fleece and no elastic waist and it worked like a charm. For everyday use? Probably not, I would have needed the elastic.
