Seasoning Recipes

Ever started a recipe, or wanted to make a new recipe, only to find that is calls for "Taco Seasoning", a "Chili Packet" or maybe even "Cajun Seasoning"?
I have, and what's even more frustrating is the price of these super specific seasonings.

So, using my dear friend Google on my phone in the grocery store one day. I made a huge money saving discovery. What was I thinking and doing before!  So there I was in the spice aisle only needing one tablespoon of Cajun seasoning. Instead of paying about $5 for a shaker of seasoning I may only use once in a blue moon. I searched on my phone what was in the seasoning and  found out what was in the seasoning and guess what I had all but one seasoning! I picked up the one ingredient for maybe $1-$2!

Another advantage?  My husband cannot eat super spicy things, so if the recipe calls for a full
tablespoon (tbspn) of something I either cut it in half or add a teaspoon (tspn)!
Same thing if your watching your salt, add a little less and taste it!

Now, the next thing I want to do is remember to save and wash my old spice containers so that I can store my mixes in them and label them!  I always forget to save the empty's!

Here are some of my favorite seasoning recipes!

  1. I love making my own mixes...they always taste better than the store-bought versions. This is my go-to seasoning mix for making hamburgers:

1 tablespoon paprika (smoked, if possible)
    1 1/4 teaspoons salt
    1 teaspoon ground black pepper
    1 teaspoon brown sugar
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/2 teaspoon onion powder
    1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
    Directions

Combine the paprika, salt, pepper, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper in an airtight container; seal. Shake to combine. Store in a cool, dry place between uses.

  2. Great idea on this! They charge so much for those mixes at the stores and it so much easier to make them at home.
