Garden 2014: September Harvest!

I just keep shaking my head,
thinking where did the Summer and now September and half of October go?!?

As you know, I weigh my garden harvest and track them so I know what is worth the space in my garden, and what may be worth buying at the store.
Plus it's fun to see how the garden compares each year!

Totals this year so far:

Beans: 7.25 lbs

Collards: 1.1 lb

Cucumbers: 31.9 lbs
(Yes! I grew 31 lbs of cucumbers, last year I only got 8 lbs! I've been pickling my little heart out, and the kids are loving it!)

Edamame: 2.7 lbs

Garlic: 1 lb

Lettuce: .6 lbs

Kale: 1.1 lb

Peas: 1.25 lbs

 Hot Peppers: 1.1 lb

Potatoes: 6.4 lbs

Rhubarb: 2.1 lbs

Squash: 1.25 lbs

Swiss Chard: 1.91 lbs

Cherry Tomatoes: 12.3 lbs
(These were a winter sowing experiment! I'm converted! More details soon!)

Tomatoes: 59.7 lbs
(Lots of sauce, rotel, salsa and pizza sauce are filling my pantry shelves!)

Apples: 1.25 lbs
Blueberries: .75 lb
Strawberries: 1 lb

Peaches: 0 lbs
Sadly, for some reason our peach trees produced not a single thing, no blossoms nothing. And they grew HUGE! to the point you have to practically crawl into the garden!

Those are just the larger quantities, I've also gotten small amounts of herbs, bok choy, and things are still growing (sweet peppers, beets, eggplant, tomatoes, squash)!! Overall so far, I've harvested 131 lbs of produce! Last year it was 130 lbs, plus with my cold frame I am able to get greens right up until Christmas!

Garden 2014: July Harvests

Wow, I cannot belive that it is already August 1st!
Where did the summer go?
I feel this summer is flying by because we have a kindergartener in the fall!

Just like last year, I have been weighing all my garden harvests and tracking them.
This way, I know what is worth the space in my garden since my garden isn't huge.

So far, we have harvested:

Beans: 3.1 lbs

Collards: 4 oz
They are ready for a big harvest this week though!

Cucumbers: 14 oz
Again, ready for a big harvest this week for a batch of pickles!

Garlic: 1 lb
Here's where the harvest tracker helps, I'm really not sure if Garlic will be planted again,
I am always dissapointed. Do you have any tips? Tricks?
Here's how I braided it last year, and froze in oil too!

Kale: 7.3 oz
(Stupid Cabbage Worms!)

Peas: 1 lb 4 oz
I bet the kids ate at least that too! So it might be double!

Potatoes: 3.5 lbs
These are our first successful year! And I have another mound to harvest this week!
Last year's attempt here.

Rhubarb: 2.1 lbs
Carter loved that he could measure it with our Family Ruler! It was 3 feet tall with the leaves on!

Tomatoes: 2.3 lbs
Which shocks me because we've maybe got 4-5!
Last year I grew about 70 lbs, so I guess this shouldn't shock me!

Blueberries 8.9 oz
Maybe a pint or two left on the bushes too!

Strawberries: 1 lb
Wyatt probably ate more than a pound!
Maybe having the strawberries on each of the swing set slide isn't a good idea! ;)

So that makes my total so far 19.2 lbs! Not bad at all!
I'm hoping to start getting some squash and zucchini, for some reason I can never get them to produce!
This year I sacrificed some plants to let one of each to really thrive, so we will see!

Also, I only listed what we have harvested so far! Weve got beets, peppers (hot and sweet), edamame, lettuce, pumpkins, winter squash and more growing!

Our Garden 2014

Oh garden how I love thee!
While I haven't been posting much, I've been hard a work getting our garden up to par!
We live in zone 5a, so our last Frost date is mid may. I've gotten to know which plants like the frost and which do not, so I know what to plant end of April and what waits til June.

Last year I grew 130 POUNDS of produce! It was amazing!
And thats just what I weighed, not to mention what the kids eat while "helping!"
This year I decided to go bigger, because my husband got me a pressure canner for Christmas, so I will be canning salsa, sauces and more! Before I could only do pickles, but more on canning in another post!

Without further adieu...

When you come out our back door and turn to the left you see our swing set, turn left again like a U turn and this is what you see! Amazing right? It took several years to get it to this size of a garden, and to look this cute but I'm one proud gardener!

When you open the gate you in what I consider the front of the garden, because the way my house and yard are it created two separate areas.
Here is what's growing in the front area.

Right as you open the gate to your right is the greens.

I had garlic there too but already pulled it. It looked so pathetic, and I got a whopping pound of garlic. I had high hopes for this year but will try again next year (this fall actually)!

On the left, behind the gate is our rhubarb.
When I find a minute strawberry rhubarb pie and jam will be made soon!

In the second row on the right side of the front garden is two succession plantings of Edamame. We just finished the last of what I froze from last year, and I planted double this year. Fingers crossed for a good crop! Next to the edamame is the peas, Yellow and Green. Wyatt has declared the yellow are better!

At the end of this row behind the peas, is our potato tower.
Last year I smothered  mine not realizing how to grow them.
This year they are growing strong!
(I did some weeding right before the picture,so they were a little manhandled)

In the second row on the left is our Cherry Tomatoes. These are an oops moment.
I decided back in February to try Winter Sowing, so I went through my seeds an found a free gift pack someone gave me, it was about half the seeds of a normal pack.  Thinking that winter sowing wouldn't work I threw the whole pack in. Well. All of them survived and thrived. So yup. There are 20 cherry tomato plants shoved in that bed right there!

The last row on the left (row 3) has my Plum tomatoes in it. I bought these at a local nursery and my winter sown cherry tomatoes are bigger than them. So yup, I will be starting all my tomatoes via the Winter sowing method (I'll definitely share more on this topic soon!)

Onto row 3 but on the right side of the path. First up, the Early Girl tomatoes (from a local nursery) There are at least a dozen tomatoes if you look under the leaves!

Next to my tomatoes (because of companion planting) is Eggplant.
My mom planned on working my "farm" for produce and this was a request of hers.
I was very pleased to see flowers last week, so we should see baby eggplants soon!

Beyond the Eggplant are four Cucumber trellis'.
I never have luck with cucumbers. Last year I bought 8 plants only one produced!
So this year I dumped one FULL pack of seeds around each trellis assuming defeat.
Well. They all took too!

Now, that's it for the front of the garden. When you pass row three you see this.

Last year I tried to use my umbrella trellis for my green beans, well they decided to grow up the sunflowers instead. And were GINORMOUS. I was putting Carter on my shoulders to pick them in August. So this year I thought I would attempt a cute bean house for the kids to be able to go in and pick.

So far I'm on the fence with out it is going to work. I've already got beans that I could pick this week, while last year I never got any til Wyatt's birthday in late August. Hopefully they will just keep growing and producing all summer? Or I got bush beans. Oops.

To the left of the beans are Squash and Zucchini. The yellow squash seeds all took, only one single green zucchini did. Guess I won't be making that much zucchini bread!

Last in line are my pumpkins, if you follow on facebook you may have seen I was rescuing pumpkins out of the compost all spring.

Turn around towards my house, and you see my blueberry bushes and apple trees (not pictured) and my container cucumbers. My in laws grow everything in containers, and thought since I haven't had luck that they would start me some containers. Guess pickles will be a must!

Under my apple tree on the corner is my asparagus bed (in container with lettuce).
We got 5 stalks of asparagus in the Spring, so I put lettuce in to fill the space.

Last up my herbs, they are doing really great!
I think because they are shaded by my peach tree they are staying wet enough!
This was my tipsy turvy planter from last year, but the dirt kept running out when I watered, so I just changed the configuration.

Grows: Garden Plan 2014

The other night before a snowstorm, I ran out for milk.
Not only did I bring home milk, but a handful of seed packets and another mini window greenhouse!
The cashier asked if I was serious. I smiled, and replied "very serious."

After I got home, I started my tomatoes and pepper plants.
Here in Upstate NY, Zone 5a you have to start them early!

Last year I had some good luck, so I checked my garden journal and found that I started them on February 2, so this year I got them started just as early.
Here's how I planted them last year, and I did the same this year.

Once I finished planting, I had to get my garden map {2013, 2012} out so I knew where I was going to put everything.  This year I am switching it up quite a bit.  Not just for crop rotation purposes, but to maximize my growing space.

I started  my first garden the first year we owned our house. That was 2007, and I literally planted cucumbers and tomatoes, in a small 2 ft x 3 ft spot dug into our lawn! Then the next year it doubled to 4 ft x 6 ft, and so on. This year I don't plan on extending the actual garden space, just using it to its fullest. Plus I plan on clearing a little bit of space in the back of our property to possibly move "our orchard".

Anyways, back to this year's plan. On paper, it looks like I have 188 sq. ft of growable space.
Here is what It looks like!

Not bad right?

The 188 sq. ft only counts the "beds". I didn't count any containers that I may use, or have already in use.  I am unsure if I will build actual beds or just mark them off somehow.

If you remember, last year I grew around 130 lbs of produce between my garden and coldframe
Which by the way, the coldframe was still producing when I checked it last week!

This year I hope to just as well (if not better) especially since my mother has decided to not garden at her house, but work my garden instead!

Are you a gardener? Veggies? Flowers?
Have you started any of your plants yet?
